Emergence of Sophisticated Energy Management Systems Strengthens Underlying Equipment, Software, and Service Markets
Date: 18 April 2011
Austin, TX – 18th April 2011 – Rising electricity demand, the emergence of the smart grid, and increased interest by consumers and governments in conserving energy, is forecast to dramatically grow the market for energy management systems (EMS) through 2015. While historically seen in limited installations outside of manufacturing and industrial environments, new industries are forecast to adopt EMS, including retail, public buildings, hospitals, and SME. In 2010, IMS Research estimated the world market for EMS to have been worth almost $1 billion globally. Double-digit growth is forecast for submetering, networking, software, and services through 2015, when global EMS revenues are predicted to climb over $1.5 billion.

EMS are evolving from ad-hoc installations of manually read meters into sophisticated networks designed to gather more granular data for energy management software. Installing EMS within a large energy-consuming facility is the first step in understanding and curtailing energy use, along with possible further investment into building automation controls and/or demand response. Many new suppliers, from metering manufacturers, to networking specialists, to dedicated software providers have recently emerged in Western Europe and North America to meet the rising demand from non-manufacturing industries and form partnerships to compete more effectively against larger multi-national EMS companies.
IMS Research defines the market for energy management systems as the revenue opportunity from the installation of power meters, submeters, networking hardware, and associated software and services, for a building owner, for own-use monitoring of electricity usage. IMS Research published annual studies on this market, with the most recent being The World Market for Energy Management and Tenant Sub-billing Systems – 2011.
