Bluetooth Stereo-type Cast Aside
Date: 01 February 2012

For many years poor audio quality has been considered the main reason why the stereo Bluetooth headset market has not realized its full potential. However, after a recent study: ‘Unlocking the Potential of the Stereo Bluetooth Headset’; IMS Research believes this is no longer the case.

“Despite a general consensus within the industry that, along with consumer awareness, a perception of poor audio quality are the major barriers holding the market back, there was a far bigger issue indicated by respondents” noted Liam Quirke, Connectivity market analyst at IMS Research.

Almost two thirds of respondents that had considered buying a stereo Bluetooth headset suggested that price was an issue that prevented them from doing so. Conversely, only 35% of those that had considered purchasing a stereo Bluetooth headset decided against it because of poor audio quality. Closely following the issue of audio quality was the ease of pairing the headset with the host device, with 31% of respondents indicating that ‘ease of connection’ was a barrier to purchase.

When compared with prices for corded stereo headphones it is not hard to understand why, many of these are also currently bundled with devices. But, with increasing stereo Bluetooth headset device qualifications, prices are anticipated to fall and awareness set to increase. According to both consumers and the industry, this may be the catalyst this market requires.
