This is one of the conclusions drawn from IMS Research’s recent report “The World Market for Payment and Banking Cards – 2011 Edition.” According to Don Tait, the author of the report, “Brazil is the second largest market for payment and banking cards in circulation in the Americas, and by far the largest market in South America.” “The number of payment and banking smart cards in circulation is increasing rapidly in Brazil. The proportion of such cards that are smart cards is forecast to grow quickly as EMV migration is ramped up and more banks and financial institutions become involved. Brazil is also gearing up for the World Cup in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. This will have a positive impact on the demand for payment and banking smart cards over the next few years.” Tait continues, “Despite there being a stalling in the GDP growth forecasts for a lot of the developed countries, IMF latest GDP forecasts for Brazil are more favourable. Between 2011 and 2015, the annual GDP growth for Brazil ranges from 3.8% to 4.1%.” The payment and banking cards market is examined for 44 countries in IMS Research’s report “The World Market for Payment and Banking Cards – 2011 Edition”.
