Brushless DC Motors to Gain Market Share in Automotive Industry
Date: 26 August 2011

Shanghai, China – 26th August, 2011. Although they only account for a small proportion of motors used in automotive applications at the moment, brushless DC (BLDC) motors are forecast to gain significant market share in the future according to IMS Research's latest report, “The World Market for Electrical Motors in Automotive Applications - 2011 Edition”. It is projected that 600 million BLDC motors will be used in traditional light vehicles by 2018 (excluding EVs/HEVs/PHEVs), three times as many as 2011’s estimated 200 million units and an 8% gain in market share.

Several automotive systems, such as electric windows and windscreen wiper systems, are expected to make use of BLDC motors increasingly in coming years. BLDC motors offer significant advantages such as higher efficiency at converting electricity into mechanical power, reduced noise, longer lifetime and higher reliability. With these advantages, the benefits of using BLDC motors are very obvious and attractive. For example, their use can improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency and provide a quieter in-car environment, both of which are excellent selling points for vehicle manufacturers.

IMS Research automotive market analyst Michael Liu comments, “Although BLDC motors are used more commonly in high-end light vehicles at the moment, it is forecast that they will be used in middle-level or even entry-level vehicles in the near future. Today, a significant disadvantage of BLDC motors is their high price; a BLDC motor is usually two to three times more expensive than a brushed DC motor. However, the price is forecast to decline with the quickly increasing production volume of BLDC motors. In addition, with fuel prices projected to stay high in the future, improving light vehicle fuel efficiency will be more and more important for all vehicle manufacturers, thus making the adoption of BLDC motors a smart choice.”

Alongside traditional vehicles, electric vehicles will  provide another significant  opportunity for BLDC motor suppliers. It is forecast that most electric motors used in electric vehicles will be BLDC motors, primarily because of their higher efficiency at converting electricity into mechanical power. IMS Research recently reported that the production volume of electric vehicles of all kinds – hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric, or fuel cell vehicles – will better 16 million by 2021.
