Education is the Key to Success in the Nebulisers Market
Date: 29 February 2012
With healthcare expenditure on the rise, there is increasing pressure on governments to find new ways to improve the health of the population, to reduce the burden on government finances. Many governments have set targets to ensure the best use of health services, while continuing to provide adequate healthcare for all. A new report from InMedica (www.in-medica.com) on the global market for nebulisers found that the growing trend to treat patients at home is fuelling demand for portable compressor/jet nebuliser systems, that increase patient mobility and hence quality of life. As the prices of portable devices are, on average, 70% higher than stationary devices, suppliers need to educate both healthcare providers and patients alike of the benefits of portable systems, if the market is to reach its full potential. InMedica predicts the global market for nebulisers will increase to $534.9 million by 2015.
Rising healthcare expenditure has become a common problem in Europe and the US and has led to a growing trend for healthcare to be managed outside the traditional hospital environment. Increasingly, patients are treated in an “alternative” or a home-care setting. According to Kelly Barritt, Senior Market Analyst at InMedica, “for the treatment of chronic diseases, many patients will choose to be treated at home rather than in a hospital. To meet this increasing demand, healthcare professionals are analysing the use and cost of different treatments that are available. They are hungry for information on the latest products and technologies that facilitate the home care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases.”
The cost of nebuliser systems is also under scrutiny; customers want to reduce costs, but still ensure that the products are safe. This is particularly evident in the US, following the ‘adverse event’ fees that were introduced with the recent Medicare update. As a result, suppliers of nebulisers are launching products with higher efficiency, which ultimately have higher costs. However, with increasing competition from lower cost devices, suppliers need to effectively communicate the clinical efficiency of the more advanced product for them to be successful in the market.
