IMS Research Identifies Key CE Trends for 2011
Date: 26 January 2011

The Consumer Electronics Group of IMS Research has identified several significant trends that will impact the CE industry during 2011. These include an increase in thinner, greener displays, more display connectivity, growth in 3D, multi-touch, gesture recognition and motion control, developments in advanced user interfaces, media and power management in the smart home, and audio metadata processing. IMS Research evaluates several of these technologies in an upcoming newsletter.

A strong new range of display and multi-touch innovations at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show suggests that the 2011 display industry will move quickly to integrate new LED technologies and advanced touch screen interactivity. LED technologies such as the edge-lighting system introduced by Samsung at CES are expected to continue driving weight, thickness, and power consumption downward in mid-to-upper price ranges. Over time, LED is expected to gradually replace traditional backlighting in all but low-end models, as the cost differential decreases.

Despite growing 3D and LED penetration on the highest-end TV models, a continued focus by consumers and manufacturers on affordabe low-end and mid-range TV models is expected to drive the bulk of 2011 TV shipments, which IMS Research estimates will surpass 230 million. Higher refresh rates from 120-240hz, Internet-connected functionality, and LED backlighting are becoming less expensive to integrate on more inexpensive TV models, and IMS Research expects that 2011’s collective TV product portfolio will feature a number of new innovations in mid-range models. Forecasts for connected TV penetration provided by Panasonic at its CES press conference are close to those of IMS Research and expect that connected TVs will grow from 21% of shipments in 2010 to 42% by 2013.

IMS Research also predicts increased consumer awareness of multi-touch technology as large displays make use of advances in projected capacitive sensing and as smaller devices incorporate resistive screens. LG, 3M, and TPK were among display manufacturers at CES showcasing real time, multi-user control of gaming apps, image manipulation and drawing tools, and handwriting recognition as a touch input.

The CES Round-up & 2011 CE Outlook from IMS Research’s Consumer Electronics Group provides more detailed observations about 2011 expectations for touch, gesture and other display technologies and as well as analysis of other underlying CE trends such as  advanced user interfaces, home networks and the smart home, and in-car audio.
