IMS Research Reports Weak Netbook Shipments In Q4 2010

Shanghai, China – 14th January 2011 – Traditionally, Q4 is the peak period for netbook shipments by ODMs in preparation for the Christmas season. However, according to IMS Research, netbook shipments by the five largest ODMs, namely Compal, Pegatron, Quanta, Inventek and Wistron, declined in Q4 2010 compared with the same period in 2009.

 

Compal, the largest netbook ODM and one of Acer’s major netbook suppliers, shipped approximately 2.7 million netbooks in Q4, 2010, equating to a 21.1% YoY decrease. Pegatron, another major netbook ODM and a main supplier for Asus EeePC, recorded a 26.6% decline in Q4 compared to the same period in 2009. It was estimated that netbook shipments from other major ODMs, such as Quanta, Wistron and Inventek, remained broadly flat.

IMS Research analyst Gerry Xu commented: ”ODM shipments are a key indicator for the world netbook market. The relative weakness of netbook shipments by ODMs demonstrates that consumer demand for netbooks was weak in Q4 2010. This can be mainly attributed to competition from Apple’s iPad and other tablet PCs. These new products were hugely popular in 4Q of 2010 and resulted in less consumer attention on netbook products.
