According to a new report, entitled “The World Market for Notebook PCs and Netbooks – 2010 Edition”, from IMS Research, the world notebook PC market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 17.6%, from 2009 to 2015. Total; shipments are forecast to reach 436 million units in 2015. The report predicts that rising shipments of Apple iPads and other tablet PCs will cannibalize the netbook market, especially in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan. However, netbooks are still attractive for users seeking fully functioned PCs with low price and small form factor. This should help offset the loss of share caused by the impact of tablet PCs and maintain the netbook market at roughly its current level for the next few years. IMS Research projects that the future growth of the world notebook PC market will come mainly from the regular notebook PC segment (excluding netbooks). The world regular notebook market is forecast to continue to grow strongly and maintain its double-digit growth rate for the next five years, benefiting from the continuous erosion of average selling prices; the transition from desktop PCs to notebook PCs, and the replacement cycle of the large notebook installed base, as software is upgraded. The impact of the iPad and other tablet PCs on the regular notebook PC market is not forecast to be significant, as they target different user groups. Research Analyst, Gerry Xu commented: “More and more users are treating notebook PCs as a necessity and they are unlikely to replace their fully functioned notebook PC with a tablet PC, although they may also purchase a tablet for other reasons. The impact of the Apple iPad and other tablet PCs on the notebook PC market is therefore forecast to be small.” Editors Note :If you would like an interview with an expert in this area, please contact Yvonne Zhang, Press Manager, at yvonne.zhang@imsresearch-china.com or +86 21 62701823.About IHS Inc.
