Recession, What Recession! 2011 Proves Yet Another Record Year for TETRA Device Market!
Date: 16 April 2012
The TETRA market had its most successful year to date in 2011 in terms of the number of terminals shipped. This is one of the key conclusions from the industry specific annual TETRA report published by IMS Research, recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE:IHS).
With growth of more than 9 percent over the terminals shipped in 2010, the latest data from IMS Research suggests that the TETRA market is experiencing a bounce back to almost pre-recession growth levels. However, forecasts predict that although growth is projected for next five years, the 2011 success may be a high in terms of the level of growth.
The European public safety and security market remains the backbone of the TETRA market; however, 2011 saw some significant developments in regions outside Europe including the Middle East, Africa, South America and Australasia. Deryn Evans, mobile radio market analyst at IMS Research, states, “We are seeing more and more success for TETRA in regions traditionally not necessarily considered strongholds of the technology. The success TETRA has had in the European arena is now being emulated in other markets, where new devices that offer enhanced capabilities including ATEX, Covert and TEDS are now gaining traction in the public safety and security markets.”
Furthermore, the traditionally strong feature set of TETRA devices also is resulting in the technology also seeing considerable success in sectors outside of the public safety market including the Utilities, Industrial and Transportation markets. “2012 is set to be an interesting year for the TETRA market as we see the technology transform its customer base to users considered more in the business critical model rather than mission. Although this definition in itself is starting to become clouded,” states Evans.
Over the past few years the market has seen a transformation in its understanding of the needs and requirements of its end users. More and more users traditionally thought of as business critical from the utilities and industrial segments are making the strong case to suggest they are indeed mission critical users themselves.
IMS Research further estimates that there still remains a significant LMR analogue installed base (more than 80 percent of existing mobile radio users) that are yet to convert to digital, indicating that the potential for growth of TETRA technology remains strong.
