Wireless Technologies - Competitive or Complementary?
Date: 22 September 2005

At a critical time when the wireless industry is in an exciting state of change, IMS Research has produced a new research report entitled, “Wireless Technologies – Competitive or Complementary?”

This report examined how a number of short range wireless technologies penetrated into 12 end equipment markets and whether this was to the detriment of other technologies or as a complimentary offering. With so many technologies to chose from; Bluetooth, UWB, WLAN, Zigbee and NFC, to name but a few, manufacturers have the difficult task of deliberating which technologies best suit their customer needs offering price sensitive applications.

In the cellular terminal market, there is room to accommodate numerous wireless technologies. The fragmentation of the cellular handset market has meant that individual technologies can carve very lucrative markets out of niche handset segments. Report analyst Fiona Thomson commented, “There is already more than one short range wireless technology in a number of cellular handsets. In the future it is possible that cellular terminals entail a collective offering of complementary technologies such as Bluetooth, WLAN and NFC.”

However, in other markets wireless technologies are competing for prominent positions in applications such as notebooks and desktop PCs. A potential threat to the proliferation of technologies such as Bluetooth and UWB is the growing reality of WLAN becoming the major networking method in the home. Market analyst Fiona Thomson commented, “IMS Research has predicted that by 2010, 99% of notebooks and almost 50% of desktop PCs will include WLAN.” She added, “This stronghold is likely to act as a barrier to newer technologies being able to penetrate, not only in these markets, but also those that are closely related.”
