A new report by IMS Research – now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS) – has found that legislation could be the deciding factor if building analytics are to see widespread adoption.

Building analytics are one of the hottest topics in the industry at the moment however; the scale of deployments has been relatively small. While the industry hype has been a key factor in educating potential customers about the benefits of using building analytics, alone it will not persuade organisations on mass to invest in what is a relatively new and untested technology.

More Than 100 Million Smart Meters with Integrated HAN Gateways to be Deployed in the Next Five Years, Driving HEMS Market Past US$9 Billion 07 June 2012

IMS Research, a leading analyst firm recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE:IHS), forecasts that more than 100 million smart meters will be deployed with integrated HAN (‘home area network’) gateways in the next five years.

An integrated HAN gateway enables communication between the smart meter and devices within a home energy management system (HEMS), such as an in-home display or smart appliance (once these are more widely available), generally using a communications solution which is discrete to the WAN/NAN solution.

UK Smart Home Energy Management Device Market to Top £2 Billion in the Next Five Years: What This Means for the Consumer 01 March 2012

Following a range of EU and UK-specific mandates, smart meters are set to be installed in most UK homes by 2019. These meters provide two-way communication between electricity (or gas) meters, and utility companies via an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network, enabling the companies to measure how much electricity consumers are using remotely and send signals back to the meter. Mass roll-out is expected to occur from 2H14, although a number of utility companies have demonstrated smaller-scale deployments already.
