Annual shipments of remote access and control thermostats that allow consumers to adjust temperature in homes via a smartphone and tablet will quadruple within a five-year period ending in 2017 as consumers aim for increased comfort in their residence, according to a new report from IMS Research, now part of IHS (NYSE: IHS).  

According to a new report from IMS Research – now part of IHS (NYSE:IHS) – the Chinese building automation market was estimated at $181.6 million in 2012, and is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7% to $344.5 million in 2017. This growth is expected take the form of solutions designed specifically for individual verticals such as airports and datacenters. 

IMS Research (now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE:IHS)), has recently released its annual intelligent building trends for the year ahead white paper. These predictions for 2013 and beyond, serve to provide insight into key trends and opportunities in the intelligent buildings industry. They are:

1.    Cloud and Big Data: is this the perfect storm for building analytics?
2.    Small but Perfectly Formed: small intelligent buildings.
3.   App Store for Building Automation: the industry focuses on user experience.

The number of devices that can connect to the Internet is forecast to increase to 9.6 billion by the end of 2012 according to IMS Research, recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE:IHS). The company, which tracks the installed base of Internet capable equipment, believes that the third wave of connected device growth is accelerating, and this will drive further growth in the connected device market, leading to its forecast of 28 billion internet connected devices by the end of 2020.

IMS Research (recently acquired by IHS (NYSE:IHS)) published a new report on integrating smart building systems in June. Ken Sinclair from AutomatedBuildings.com interviewed senior analyst and report author William Rhodes to discuss the research and key findings.  

IMS Research, a leading analyst firm recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE:IHS), forecasts that more than 100 million smart meters will be deployed with integrated HAN (‘home area network’) gateways in the next five years.

An integrated HAN gateway enables communication between the smart meter and devices within a home energy management system (HEMS), such as an in-home display or smart appliance (once these are more widely available), generally using a communications solution which is discrete to the WAN/NAN solution.

The building automation market is heavily influenced by the construction market. As building automation systems offer energy savings, building automation systems are installed to save money despite the state of the construction market. However, the construction market remains an important driver and inhibitor for the growth of the building automation market. 

In the next five years, around 400 million ‘smart home energy management’ devices will be shipped globally, according to a recent study from IMS Research, a leading analyst firm recently acquired by IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS). This includes devices such as smart meters, smart thermostats, in-home displays, ‘smart appliances’, and load control switches [see figure below]. This represents a major opportunity for IC suppliers, driving connectivity technologies into a wide range of typically ‘un-connected’ devices. Yet the type of connectivity technologies selected varies by both country and the type of company deploying the energy management solution.

Following a range of EU and UK-specific mandates, smart meters are set to be installed in most UK homes by 2019. These meters provide two-way communication between electricity (or gas) meters, and utility companies via an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) network, enabling the companies to measure how much electricity consumers are using remotely and send signals back to the meter. Mass roll-out is expected to occur from 2H14, although a number of utility companies have demonstrated smaller-scale deployments already. According to a recent study from IMS Research, a leading independent supplier of market research and consultancy to the global electronics industry, in the next five years, over £2.4 billion will be spent in the UK on smart home energy management devices – ranging from smart meters themselves, to in-home devices that can ‘talk’ to them.

Building Automation Markets Exceed $1.6 Billion in EMEA, and $1.7 Billion in Americas in 2010 

According to a new report by IMS Research, a leading independent supplier of market research and consultancy to the global electronics industry, the building automation controllers, software and sensors market in EMEA was worth $1.6 billion in 2010, and the Americas market totaled $1.7 billion last year. The report, “The EMEA and Americas Markets for Building Automation Controllers, Software and Sensors – 2011 Edition”, finds that companies are increasingly improving the energy efficiency of their buildings by using building automation systems.
